Jean O'Donell's letter 'Plan Needed' (Hereford Times, 13 December) on the proposed student block details various plans for the significant area around our attractive railway station.

That evening I attended a Hereford Civic Society meeting; we heard that, that same day, a Cabinet meeting had agreed to pass this new project for Council consideration. I am concerned that this has been rushed through. This site and organisation of traffic and parking is key for the city and the wellbeing of all. There must be time for joined up thinking and the confidence that this is the best place to house so many students. For instance, what are the present figures for air pollution at this congested junction? And projected figures if all the other plans are still valid? Is there any green space?

Mike Truelove, operations manager of Hereford BID, was speaking about his role in the rehabilitation of our city centre – it is now cleaner, safer and more attractive to all. This has been made possible because people get together with a long term plan. But access is key. I love Hereford and its history; I would dearly like to be able to enjoy it more. BID has had no influence on traffic and parking.

I believe in openness and collaboration. It is the users who understand the details and implications. I want our Councillors to show that they have an integrated vision and care about quality of life here. Please show us you understand the impact of this site. I want to welcome students to a thriving city and county but what will the next generation be living with?
