THE landlord of a popular pub in Worcester explained how a "chance encounter" led to the historic drinking hole featuring on a television show.

Darren Yong, landlord of the King Charles House Pub on New Street in Worcester, revealed how a chat about the pub's history "intrigued" a television production crew.

What he thought was initially a conversation with customers turned out to be producers for a show called Weird Britain.

Before he knew it, a film crew came at the crack of dawn the following morning to feature the pub on the show.

"It's a show on Blaze TV that is just completing its second series where they film weird and wonderful buildings," said Mr Yong.

"They look at interesting features that places have and were interested in our fireplace that dates back to the 18th century and did a piece on it, as well as the pub's origins with King Charles."

Mr Yong said the show was currently in production after filming took place last week.

The pub was not originally planned to feature in the programme when the production team made a casual visit.

"They did a piece on the cathedral and happened to come to the pub on Friday night," added Mr Yong.

"I gave them a brief history of the fireplace and the pub, which intrigued them.

"Once they had a background on it, they arrived at 9am the next morning and took over the pub for four hours - it was a bit of a chance encounter.

"It was never in the original plan of the programme but I think they realised the potential to feature it.

"It's wonderful. Any publicity is good and the boost is welcome.

"We're kind of on people's doorstep so the more that can hear about the history and the hospitality that we offer the better.

"The pub's history has the foundations of Worcester - people don't seem to recognise that."

The King Charles House is not only making the TV screen but also hitting the headlines internationally.

A journalist from the Sunday Times in South Africa put together an article on the pub that is due to be printed within the next week.

"Independent from the television show a freelance journalist visited Worcester and came across the pub," said Mr Yong.

"I got chatting to them and didn't think too much about it, but they wrote a piece for the travel edition.

"It's great, any coverage is good especially when it's international.

"We've had many Americans book here before, so it seems to be spreading."
